Saturday in the Park beneficiaries:

Over the past sixteen years, Saturday in the Park has financially supported local women’s charities with programs dedicated to providing shelter, counseling, advocacy and education for women and their families in Monmouth and Ocean counties - places of safety where hope can be realized and a new way of living can be learned. Our 2010 list of organizations will include:

Manna House, Cliffwood Beach - Manna House is a transitional housing program for women and children, designed to provide a safe living environment and an indepth Life skills program geared toward ending homelessness.
Providence House, Lakewood. Providence House offers services to women and children who are affected by domestic violence. Services include emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling and therapy as well as community education and training.
Spring House, Eatontown - provides housing, life and work skill classes as well as childcare, for homeless women with children, providing the “springboard” to help residents learn life skills to gain self-sufficiency.

Training Sessions

Saturday in the Park and the Jersey Shore Running Club offer a group-training running program, Rundamentals beginning in June. Rundamentals is a ten-week program geared toward first time runners and those who would like to return to running after a break. Part of the JSRC’s Saturday in the Park Women’s 5K, the main objective is to encourage women to enjoy the benefits of running. JSRC volunteer, Liz Ireland, coordinates the program. Liz is a veteran runner of 35 years and an ASED (American Sport Education Program) certified running coach through Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). Liz has organized marathon training for JSRC members for 10 years. Other experienced JSRC club member volunteers will provide assistance. For more information on Rundamentals, please send an email to: Rundamentals@verizon.net . Class size is limited.

HS Team Incentives

SIP has enjoyed enthusiastic support from many girls’ high school and youth athletic teams.  In addition to many of the states’ female cross-country teams participating in the race, teams from other sports, including soccer and field hockey, have participated in large numbers.  In an effort to show our appreciation to these teams and to encourage continued support of SIP and the race’s beneficiaries, the race is offering two benefits to high school and youth teams.  First, all members of these teams will get the special entry fee of $15 provided that they register prior to August 28.  New this year will be awards to the top three high school or youth teams based on their number of participants.  The awards will be a contribution to their team fund in the following amounts: $100 to the team with the most participants, $75 to the team with the second largest number of participants and $50 to the team with the third largest number of participants.  For more information on this program, please email penny@saturdayinthepark5k.org

A purple ribbon - in remembrance of Mary Conry.  She was a friend, a co-worker, a fellow runner. We who knew her were fortunate to have Mary in our lives.

We thank participants and volunteers for wearing a ribbon to remember Mary Conry, JSRC member who recently passed away. Ribbons will be available at a special table near the race registration area. We will also be collecting optional donations, to be presented to a local women's crisis center in Mary's name.
