The Saturday in the Park Race Committee of the Jersey Shore Running Club is working hard to ensure the 2008 event is as successful as each of the past 14 years. Hope to see you there!
Saturday in the Park beneficiaries.
Over the past thirteen years, Saturday in the Park has financially supported local women’s charities with programs dedicated to providing shelter, counseling, advocacy and education for women and their families in Monmouth and Ocean counties - places of safety where hope can be realized and a new way of living can be learned. Our 2008 list of organizations will include:
Epiphany House
of Asbury Park & Long Branch. Epiphany House provides transitional housing and services to create and maintain a self-affirming life to homeless women and children who seek to recover from addiction. A major goal of the organization is to break the chain of addiction by preventing children from repeating these patterns.
Providence
House, Lakewood. Providence House offers services to women and children who are affected by domestic violence. Services include emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling and therapy as well as community education and training.
Spring House, Eatontown - provides housing, life and work skill classes as well as childcare, for homeless women with
children, providing the “springboard” to help residents learn life skills to gain self-sufficiency.
Our annual JSRC Women's Running 101 program for beginning runners is now filled for this summer. Due to overwhelming demand, all three sessions have reached capacity. For those of you who are already in a consistent running routine and are interested in improving your training or getting better prepared for the Saturday in the Park, you may be interested in one of Coach John and Coach Elaine's other group training programs this summer. Visit the JSRC Womens 101 webpage for links to information and registration.
HS Team IncentivesSIP has enjoyed enthusiastic support from many girls’ high school and youth athletic teams. In addition to many of the states’ female cross-country teams participating in the race, teams from other sports, including soccer and field hockey, have participated in large numbers. In an effort to show our appreciation to these teams and to encourage continued support of SIP and the race’s beneficiaries, the race is offering two benefits to high school and youth teams. First, all members of these teams will get the special entry fee of $15 provided that they register prior to August 26. New this year will be awards to the top three high school or youth teams based on their number of participants. The awards will be a contribution to their team fund in the following amounts: $150 to the team with the most participants, $100 to the team with the second largest number of participants and $50 to the team with the third largest number of participants. A purple ribbon - in remembrance of Mary Conry. She was a friend, a co-worker, a fellow runner. We who knew her were fortunate to have Mary in our lives.
We thank participants and volunteers for wearing a ribbon to remember Mary Conry, JSRC member who recently passed away. Ribbons will be available at a special table near the race registration area. We will also be collecting optional donations, to be presented to a local women's crisis center in Mary's name.Asbury Park Press Article AHHerald Online Newspaper
